Dan Gets a Minivan (Hardcover)

Dan Gets a Minivan (Hardcover)

$32.91

In the bestselling and beloved tradition of Dave Barry, a coming-of-middle-age tale by Thurber finalist Dan Zevin, master of “Seinfeld-ian nothingness” (Time) about a man’s inevitable transition into mid-life and fatherhood. The least hip citizen of Brooklyn, Dan Zevin has a working wife, two small children, a mother who visits each week to “help,” and an obese Labrador mutt who prefers being driven rather than walked. How he got to this point is a bit of a blur. There was a wedding, and then there was a puppy. A home was purchased in New England. A wife was promoted and transferred to New York. A townhouse. A new baby boy. A new baby girl. A stay-at-home dad was born. A prescription for Xanax was filled. Grey hairs appeared, grey hairs fell out. Six years passed in six seconds. And then came the minivan. Not just a daddy book, Dan Gets a Minivan is about a guy who happens to be a dad. Acclimating to adulthood has never been his strong suit, and this slice-of-midlife story chronicles the whole hilarious journey—from instituting date night to joining Costco; from touring Disneyland to recovering from knee surgery; from losing ambition to gaining perspective. Where it’s all heading is anyone’s guess, but, for Dan, suburbia’s calling—and his minivan has GPS.

Cabin Fever: A Suburban Father's Search for the Wild

Cabin Fever: A Suburban Father’s Search for the Wild

$13.39

“If Tom Montgomery Fate has not found the secret formula for the deliberate, balanced life, he is a chief disciple of the search.”—Chicago Tribune   Try to imagine Thoreau married, with a job, three kids, and a minivan. This is the sensibility—serious yet irreverent—that suffuses Cabin Fever, as the author seeks to apply the hermit-philosopher’s insights to a busy modern life. Tom Montgomery Fate lives in a Chicago suburb, where he is a husband, father, professor, and active member of his community. He also lives in a cabin built with the help of friends in the Michigan woods, where he walks by the river, chops wood, and reads Thoreau by candlelight. Fate seeks a more attentive, deliberate way of seeing the world and our place in it, not only in the woods but also in the context of our relationships and society. In his search for “a more deliberate life” amid a high-tech, material world, Fate invites readers into an interrogation of their own lives, and into a new kind of vision: the possibility of enough in a culture of more.

Trip from Boston, MA to Ft. Lauderdale, FL?

Who can tell me how much gas would a fairly new minivan take to get from Boston, -Ft. lauderdale, and how many tolls in between pretty much following I95 South –what rest stops to avoid –safe ones to make sure we use w/kids (potty calls etc) not in the woods either… regular bathrooms etc…
Also would like to make pit stop in VA to visit some friends, what stops would u make to make lets say a 2 week trip worth it…

Well, that’ll be roughly 1500 miles. How much gas depends on the gas mileage of your van – divide 1500 by your van’s gas mileage to get the number of gallons of gas you’ll need.

It’s been a while since I drove down to Florida, but as I recall there are tolls in NY (bridges mostly), all through New Jersey (turnpike and parkway), Maryland and Delaware (bridges and tunnels, I think). After that it’s pretty much toll-free.

I’ve never had any problem at any of the rest stops I’ve stopped at. New Jersey has huge rest areas with restaurants and everything, at least in the northern half (not sure if you’ll go that way, though – I always took I-90 to I-84 through CT, then down to the Tappan Zee Bridge, instead of going on I-95 through NYC).
