What do I need to install an aftermarket radio in my 2005 Trailblazer?
Bestbuy is doing the installation. They told me later model GM vehicles, like mine, require a $120 adapter to install the radio. When I went to find a cheaper one online, it seems you only need the adapter to keep your “door chimes”, which I don’t really care about. I called back to make sure w/ bestbuy, and they told me again that the adapter was required for installtion. Does anyone have experience with this? Do I HAVE to have this adapter? It’s a 2005 trailblazer with crappy factory radio and onstar (i don’t care about retaining the onstar either) Thanks for your help!
Speaking from experience, it would definitely need to be purchased, and I’d go through them. If they mess it up, they cover it.
Reason I say that to begin with, most every GM car made after 04, the radio is not only tied into the “chime, security, safety, etc…”, it’s directly connected to your computer’s pcm (brain). If you tinker with it, or disconnect the radio and connect another, it could cause your whole computer system to shut down, disabling your vehicle, period. Be very careful about buying anything ‘aftermarket’, or supplying them with a part they didn’t tell you was the “right” one.
I’ve seen the worse happen, more than once.
