By the time its third album was released, the Chicago-based electronic duo Die Warzau (Jim Marcus and Van Christie) had already released two albums (1989′s Disco Rigido and 1991′s Big Electric Metal Bass Face) on two record labels. After several years of inactivity (though the band did production work for Sister Machine Gun and KMFDM), Die Warzau finally resurfaced in 1995 with Engine; the album was released on the Chicago-based industrial-music label Wax Trax, and this new home fit Die Warzau like a silk glove. Engine is a major leap forward for Die Warzau, as it contains some of its most hard-hitting (and surprisingly pop-friendly) material. The album is diverse in sounds and styles, and the mixture of moods and musical approach shows astonishing artistic depth. Engine utilizes many of the ingredients of Die Warzau’s first two albums, but the band has evolved considerably since its debut, utilizing a more apparent dance approach with each successive release. Atmospheric, electronic sound collages, squealing guitars, and minimalist lyrics are at the forefront on tracks like “Grounded” and “Muck.” “Grounded” is particularly strong, combining Nine Inch Nails-style chanting in its chorus with rap-flavored verses. But the song is unusually catchy, showing off Die Warzau’s expertise in crafting pop hooks without sacrificing the heavy approach. “Heroin A.D.” is also a keeper, with its inventive mixture of sax, piano, and throbbing bass. Engine’s best track is the haunting “All Good Girls.” The tune’s chilling lyric contrasts beautifully with its quiet, repetitive groove, making “All Good Girls” sound like some sort of demented lullaby. Die Warzau’s mixture of musical styles on Engine can take a listener by surprise — track by track, it’s difficult to predict what direction the band will take next. The song’s subject matter is surprising in itself, revealing another side of a band that isn’t shy about expressing its political views, but the straightforward, almost pop-friendly approach on “All Good Girls” makes much of Engine’s genre-hopping seem excessive by comparison. Fortunately, Die Warzau possesses the sophistication and craftsmanship to make Engine a remarkably intelligent release in a genre not really known for its depth. Simply put, Engine is one of the greatest industrial albums of all time. ~ William Cooper, Rovi Performers: Matt Warren – Turntables; Van Christie – Noise, Keyboards, Guitar; Jason McNinch – Oscillator, Vibraphone, Guitar; Mars Williams – Horn; Jason More – Percussion;

The August Engine

The August Engine

$11.18

Hammers of Misfortune’s first effort, 2000′s The Bastard, was a concept album as bold in its strangeness as it was impeccable in its execution, so much so that even when the music didn’t always stand up under scrutiny, one was still guaranteed to be thoroughly entertained by the overall end result. Such is also oddly the case — after reversing the success rates of music and words — with its 2001 follow-up, The August Engine, whose stunning black and silver artwork scheme alone leads to heightened expectations, which its actual contents can only partly satisfy. A clear-cut case of two halves, the first is inaugurated in pounding metal fashion by an instrumental overture positively teeming with incredible riffs and unexpected twists; segues into a gentle amalgam of acoustic guitar, stark piano, and the crystalline vocals from guest Lorraine Rath called “Rainfall”; resumes thrashing intensity with the cryptic “A Room and a Riddle”; and finally concludes via the title track’s frankly dazzling, nearly nine-minute display of labyrinthine rhythm and lead guitar work. So far, so good, as the above come complemented by Hammers of Misfortune’s typically imaginative and evocative lyrics, detailing a dreamlike voyage to parallel dimensions marked by visions at once medieval and industrial in nature, and leaving one riveted for what the album’s second half might reveal. Unfortunately, the wheels start coming off the wagon instead, as ensuing numbers “Insect” and “Doomed Parade,” while only slightly inferior to their predecessors in terms of musical daring, are marred by lyrics which, reliably poetic or not, quickly move from challenging to impenetrable. By the time the album heads toward a confusing and less than convincing finale with the needlessly protracted doom stylings of “The Trial and the Grave,” the plot is utterly lost, and one can only wonder if the final product wasn’t perhaps rushed by imminent personnel changes on the horizon — bassist and vocalist Janis Tanaka being given her marching papers. Whatever the cause, the meticulously thought-out story line of their debut remains unchallenged while The August Engine’s instrumental portions arguably show a general improvement, indicating at best a draw. Having said all that, however, the fact remains that Hammers of Misfortune’s records are still quirky and original enough to merit the attention of open-minded metal fans. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi Performers: Sitara Kapoor – Cello; Chewy Marzolo – Drums; Jamie Myers – Bass, Vocals; Janis Tanaka – Bass, Vocals; John Cobbett – Vocals, Guitar;

The Difference Engine

The Difference Engine

$13.58

To say that Luke Solomon is going big for his solo debut isn’t a surprise — everything from the cover shot to song titles like “Robots” and “Junkies and Whores” makes everything seem like it’s his specific stamp on a style and ethos. Nothing wrong with that, and if The Difference Engine doesn’t hold up over the course of an album, it’s definitely got some good edges to it throughout. One of the better numbers is also one of the more amusingly and straightforwardly titled — “Martin, a Cello and Me,” with the cello in question providing an understated but straightforward performance that contrasts nicely with the rougher static bursts and beats. Other standouts include the closing “Liquid,” with a great drum break as well as horn parts to wrap things up on a party note, and the jazzy, woozy breakdowns on “The Beat Goes,” with a great spoken word bit about young and old people that is as obvious as it is entertaining. The opening track, the titular number, has enough rough crunches to show that he’s not out to only make a clean listening experience — no bad thing at all — while “People, Places, Thoughts and Faces” provides a gentler contrast, an easy groove with good vocals. Meanwhile, “Robots” sounds like the titular objects slightly breaking down and spiking — it’s not Aphexy-beat-collapse wooze but it’s not far removed around the corners. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Chris Storr – Horn; Martin Radford – Cello; Luke Solomon – Percussion; Nathan Haines – Flute

Twin Engine

Twin Engine

$13.59

These 12 songs were recorded by Twin Engine in 1971 with the intention of getting an album together for release on United Artists, but they weren’t issued until more than 30 years later. The music has very much of a 1970 aura, mightily influenced at different points by the Let It Be-era Beatles (particularly in the guitar sound of “Give My Love a Chance,” “The Time Is Now,” and “Mistress of the Morning”), Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (a riff in “The Time Is Now” seems airlifted directly from Neil Young’s “Cowgirl in the Sand”), American Beauty-era Grateful Dead, and the country-rock being laid down by the Flying Burrito Brothers/Byrds axis in Southern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. (That last influence may not have been entirely due to chance, as Byrds and/or Burritos members Chris Hillman, Clarence White, and Sneaky Pete Kleinow are all referred to in the packaging as having played on the sessions, though it’s not specified who played on what track). It’s very accomplished, and Twin Engine’s duo harmonies are quite cheerful and invigorating. What it lacks is a sound of its own, and it’s easy to see that a label of the time might have passed on it due to its similarity to some other bands of the era, or at least encouraged the pair to keep working up material until something more distinctive evolved. Now that competing in the marketplace isn’t a concern, it’s actually a pretty pleasant listen — derivative, yes, but considerably stronger and more polished than most albums that are heavily derivative of their surrounding times and styles. There are the makings of a solid country-rock band here, albeit one more pop-influenced than most, like a less-slick Eagles. While it’s too bad they didn’t get any further, this relic of their abortive flight isn’t at all bad. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Clarence White – Guitar; DeWayne Quirico – Drums; Joe Foster – Synthesizer; Joey Stec – Guitar; Nick Robbins – Synthesizer; Ralph Scala – Organ; Randy Fuller – Bass; Randy Naylor – Keyboards, Guitar (Acoustic)

Engine Machine

Engine Machine

$10.38

The closest comparison to Denmark’s Düreforsög is probably Wire — certainly in their most creative period. The Danes have a similar off-the-wall spirit about songwriting, although tracks like “Interlude” hang together very well. They have a punk spirit about them, as evidenced on “A Racetrack,” but also a sense of atmosphere and adventure that keeps pushing to the edge. To possess those qualities and come up with interesting material is a feat, but one the band manages. They don’t have the abruptness of Wire; instead their songs develop and extend, and there’s more emphasis on guitar among the metal percussion, gurgling and spitting. And there’s a definite beauty in the melodies. The title track is a curious little piece on Moog. Rhythms are always solid, and often unusual, but they lay a strong foundation for the spikiness that’s “Get On Land.” They pull out all the stops for “Rendetaarn, KBH,” which includes everything but the kitchen sink in a fountain of carefully constructed noise that deconstructs down to a nagging Can-like riff . It’s perhaps facile to define the group in terms of other bands, especially when they have their own developed sound, and they’re only going to get better. But the analogies serve as markers toward the territory they’re mining, and with Engine Machine, they’re finding a lot of gold in the seams. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi Performers: Anders Bech – Talking, Clapping, Sound Effects, Vocals (Background); Düreforsög – Talking, Clapping, Sound Effects, Vocals (Background); Flemming Hansson Jr. – Talking, Clapping, Vocals (Background), Sound Effects; Jacob Løde Jensen – Talking, Clapping, Vocals (Background), Sound Effects; Jesper Ranum – Moog Synthesizer; Kathrine Ruus Jørgensen – Clapping, Talking, Vocals (Background), Sound Effects; Lars Lundholm – Talking, Clapping,

 13th Floor Elevators

13th Floor Elevators

$54

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 13th Floor Elevators were an American rock band from Austin, Texas which existed from 1965 to 1969. During their career, the band released four LPs and seven 45s for the International Artists record label. The 13th Floor Elevators found some commercial and artistic success in 1966-67, before dissolving amid legal troubles and drug use in late 1968. As one of the first psychedelic bands, their contemporary influence has been acknowledged by 1960s musicians such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Peter Albin of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Chris Gerniottis of Zakary Thaks. Their debut 45 “You’re Gonna Miss Me”, a national Billboard #55 hit in 1966, was featured on the 1972 compilation Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968, which is considered vital in the history of garage rock and the development of punk rock. Seminal punk band Television played their “Fire Engine” live in the mid-1970s. In the 1980s-90s, the 13th Floor Elevators influenced important bands such as 14 Iced Bears who use an electric jug on their single Beautiful child, Primal Scream and Spacemen 3, both of whom covered their songs.

It was the fifth round of the 1950 World Drivers Championship. By the time of the Belgian Grand Prix, the pace of the season was beginning to tell, with only 14 cars arriving at the Spa circuit. These included the dominant Alfa Romeos of Nino Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli. Ferrari was down to two 125s for Luigi Villoresi and Alberto Ascari, although Ascari had a new V12 engine to try out. The factory Talbot-Lago team had three cars for Louis Rosier, Yves Giraud-Cabantous and Philippe Étancelin (standing in for the injured Eugène Martin). The rest of the field was made up of Talbot- Lagos (notably one for Raymond Sommer), a single Alta and one Maserati for Toni Branca. Farina and Fangio were fastest as usual in qualifying with Fagioli unable to match them. Sommer split the Ferraris in his old Talbot-Lago. The race would be a similar story. The Alfas went off on their own and Sommer battled with the two Ferraris.

It was part of the 1953 World Drivers’ Championship, which was run to Formula Two rules in 1952 and 1953, rather than the Formula One regulations normally used. A record crowd of over 100,000 spectators crammed into the forest track to watch this dramatic race. The Maseratis were definitely capable of matching the Ferraris for sheer speed – Juan Manuel Fangio put in a record- shattering practice lap of 117 mph. At the flag, he waved José Froilán González past and stunned everyone with another blitzkrieg lap of 110 mph from a standing start. After 11 laps, González had pulled out a full minute’s lead, but it had taken its toll on his engine which expired, leaving Fangio half a minute clear. On lap 13, it was the other Argentine’s turn to fall prey to engine troubles and Ferrari inherited another 1-2 victory from the third Argentine driver Onofre Marimón who gained his first podium position.

Ferrari dominated practice and occupied the first three grid positions with Fangio’s pole time 2.2 sec faster than second. However, Maserati dominated the early race with Menditeguy and Moss leading the field. Fangio was a non factor with a faulty fuel pump. He took over Musso’s car on lap 29 and re-entered in fifth place. Fangio quickly passed Behra but lost his position after spinning. From laps 40-43 disaster struck the leaders. While third Castellotti’s gearbox broke, Menditguy left the lead with a broken driveshaft, and new leader Moss’ engine began to smoke.

He hit the straw bails on lap 2, causing Schell and Musso to retire when trying to avoid him, and on lap 32 he hit the harbour wall, bending a rear wheel. He turned the car over to Castellotti after the pit stop to fix the wheel. On lap 54 while second, Collins came in the pit and turned his car over to Fangio. He resumed in third and passed Behra for second on lap 70 but he was 47 seconds behind Moss. On lap 86 Perdisa’s brakes locked when being lapped by Moss, the resulting contact caused Moss’ bonnet to lift allowing Fangio to close the gap by two seconds each lap but Moss won with a 6 second cushion.

The United Kingdom ‘s first indigenous rocketry project, Black Knight was manufactured by Saunders-Roe on the Isle of Wight , had its engines tested at The Needles and was launched at Woomera in Australia . Designed in 1955 by the Royal Aircraft Establishment and Saunders-Roe , 22 vehicles were fired between 1958 and 1965. The Gamma rocket engines were designed and built by Armstrong-Siddeley at Anstey, near Coventry . One of the men who designed the engine was C. Donald. The first two vehicles were ‘proving rounds’ – that is, launches without a payload in order to prove the design of the rocket. The third firing carried a re-entry vehicle. This flight showed that the chosen design for the re-entry body was a success. Further firings with different heads showed up some unusual phenomena, and further tests under the code names Gaslight and Dazzle were carried out in conjunction with the United States. A variety of heads were flown in these tests, including a plain copper sphere and a silica sphere. Heads composed of a composite asbestos -based material known as Durestos were also flown, and later tests finalised on a cone-shaped head re-entering pointed-end first, as

Therefore the five works teams were awarded two places each on the grid, and Stirling Moss and Maurice Trintignant qualified as the past winners. Leaving nine drivers to fight over four places, a fifth place opened up when Innes Ireland crashed during the final practice session, breaking his leg. Stirling Moss took pole position from Richie Ginther and Jim Clark, with Graham Hill and Phil Hill on the second row.

Why is it illegal to put an engine from an older car in a newer one?

Why is it illegal to put an engine from an older car in a newer one in most states?

The engine itself will already have its emission standards for the year that engine was built. when the standards change, the emissions of engines being built that year need to be changed, but older engines with lower emissions are not outlawed. Since that engine is still legal to run obviously, which car it is in shouldnt really matter. Its not like there are more of those lower standard engines being built. Besides, noone is really going to know. Its not like you’ll be arrested for that. Its just one of those overlooked laws, trust me
