Car buying question…may be dumb but I need advice!?

We’re looking at a car today from a private seller and would like to take the car (minivan, actually) to our mechanic to be looked over carefully before we buy it. Question is, how do we do that w/o the owner thinking we’re just taking the van and running?? Even if we explain, which we will of course, how does he know we’re not stealing it? And since my husband is working all day Monday, we would have to drop the van off on Sun. evening at our mechanic’s shop to be checked the next day; I have no way to do it myself on Monday, not with two small children in tow and no one to help. What can we do?? We certainly don’t want to put the money down before we have it checked out. Help!

First of all you leave your car with them, a copy of your licens or even one of your licens, and just talk with them. They’ll understand if they are selling the car. If they don’t want you to take the car to the mechanic because they’re afraid you’ll steal it, then there is probably something wrong with the car because that is standard procedure before purchasing a car.
