Needs Transmission What are some signs that the transmission in my car needs to be checked?
Does a bad transmission affect starting and fuel consumption? The car is slipping when it goes from gear to gear, and the check engine light is on.
Yes, all those things can be related. A bad transmission can show slippage when moving from one gear to another or will change gears at odd RPMs or will not change gears at all.
Since your transmission determines how fast you go at a given engine speed, your tranny can most definitely affect your mileage. If you are getting clutch slip while you are driving you may be running the car at a higher rev rate and just not going as fast or as far. Yes, automatics have clutches too.
The check engine light can possibly be your O2 sensor like previous poster suggested. Or it might not be. If it’s flashing don’t drive the car… you need to get it fixed right away and driving it can damage it further. If it is solid take it to a mechanic as soon as possible. A check engine light can be something as simple as a bad O2 or a loose gas cap. BUT, it might be something wrong with your fuel delivery, temperature, or any one of several dozen critical systems that your ECU is connected to. Too many people make the mistake of dismissing the CEL as an O2 sensor malfunction and though this may be the case… it’s not worth the risk to not get it checked out. For some reason CEL = O2 sensor malfunction to a lot of folks, but tell me how that makes sense if the ECU regulates every electrically regulated system on the car. Take the car to get it checked out by a mech.
