Can extreme cold weather cause car windows to break?

I live in Michigan where it has been extremely cold lately. I recently returned to the parking lot after work to find the back window of my minivan broken and was wondering if it was caused by the cold or vandalism.

Cold will make the window a lot more brittle so sometimes it will break much more easily than normal, even with just an accidental contact.
