How many miles is to many in buying a used car?
We are looking to purchase a third vehicle. Nothing fancy, used, around $3200. I need an SUV or a mini van to transport several children, in car seats. Most of the vehicles I seen have had 180,000, 230,000, etc. My husband says these are not even worth looking at because the motor will need to be replaced soon, okay, so I understand that. Now have found a minivan a 2000 chevy venture with 140,000 miles for $2995. He says that’s still to many miles, so my questions is; What should I be looking for in terms of miles for the amount of money we want to spend?
Thank you in advance
140,000 is quite high on a Domestic vehicle. But as far as Imports are concerned, they’ll still have plenty of life left. Toyota’s are capable of exceeding 200,000 miles reliably if maintained. Same goes for Honda’s and Saab’s, believe it or not. When dealing with Ford and Chevy, you’ll mostly be concerned with head gasket leaks and differential seal leaks with that excessive mileage. If you know the original owner, this can aid your decision considerably.
