100 Years of Brooklands: The Birthplace of British Motorsport & Aviation. A Photographic History

100 Years of Brooklands: The Birthplace of British Motorsport & Aviation. A Photographic History

$36.03

Conceived and designed by Peter Campbell working in conjunction with top advertising photographer Ron Bambridge and the Brooklands Museum, this profusely illustrated book celebrates the centenary of the world’s first custom-built motor racing circuit and home of British aviation. In the pioneering days of driving, competitive racing was banned on public roads in the United Kingdom. British automobile manufacturers could only watch as their European counterparts such as Fiat, Renault, and Peugeot gained valuable publicity from city-to-city races held around the continent, despite the inherent dangers. To create a base for UK motor sport, Hugh Fortescue Locke-King designed a circuit where cars could race in comparative safety. In 1906 he set to work to build a huge concrete banked oval bowl, 100 feet wide and more than two miles long, on land he owned in Surrey. This formidable engineering project was completed within 18 months and in 1907, Brooklands held its first race. It remained in constant use until 1939 and the cars and drivers who competed there have passed into legend. Huge, powerful cars from companies such as Duesenberg, Railton, Lorraine-Dietrich, and Bentley, and smaller cars from MG and Morgan, all took part in long distance races and record breaking. Pioneer drivers such as Malcolm Campbell, Raymond Mays, and J. G. Parry-Thomas competed against fearless lady racers like Doreen Evans and Kay Petrie. It was John Cobb at the wheel of his mighty Napier Railton that established the ultimate circuit record of 143.33mph. The reputation of many motorcycle companies like Norton, Ariel, Zenith, and Douglas were established due to their exploits at Brooklands. Within the groundsof the concrete circuit, hangars were built alongside a small runway. From these buildings pioneer aviators Alliott Verdon-Roe, Tommy Sopwith, and Harry Hawker founded the British aviation industry. It became the home of the Vickers aircraft company and during WWII, numerous aircraft

Excerpt: Belzec Belzec , Polish spelling Be ec , was the first of the Nazi German extermination camps created for implementing Operation Reinhard during the Holocaust . Operating in 1942, the camp was situated in occupied Poland about half a mile south of the local railroad station of Be ec in the Lublin district of the General Government . At least 434,500 Jews were killed at Be ec, along with an unknown number of Poles and Roma ; only one or two Jews are known to have survived Be ec: Rudolf Reder and Chaim Hirszman. The lack of survivors may be the reason why this camp is so little known despite its number of victims. Camp construction and purposes Belzec was situated in the Lublin district forty-seven miles north of the major city of Lwow (Lviv, Lvov), conveniently between the large Jewish populations of south east Poland and eastern Galicia. Belzec extermination camp, the model for two others in the ‘Aktion Reinhard’ murder program, started as a labor camp in April 1940, in the course of the Burggraben -project attached to the Lublin reservation in the same area: the reservation was to serve as a pool for forced labour exploited by various small camps like Belzec, to erect defensive works along the Nazi-Soviet demarcation line such as a long anti-tank ditch. While the Burggraben project was shut down by the end of the year due to its inefficiency, Belzec was re-opened in 1941 to finish part of the anti-tank ditch. On 13

A Place Called Home: The People and Landscape of Clinton County, Ohio

A Place Called Home: The People and Landscape of Clinton County, Ohio

$13.64

The photographers of the Clinton County project—there were nearly twenty of them—did not work quickly; they studied the lay of the land, met people, drove the streets and alleys of every community, and knocked on several hundred doors. More than two years, countless miles, and several thousand images later, the result is A Place Called Home. One of the most ambitious photographic projects ever compiled in Ohio, it arose as idea in the minds of two local women—Joann Chamberlin and Leilani Popp—who saw it as a fund-raising vehicle for their Clinton County Foundation. Its execution fell to the localOrange Frazer Press, whose urban art and coffeetablebooks had put it within the orbit of some of the best photographers in the country. And so it began, the diverse group ranging from Thomas Witte (journeyman Sports Illustrated shooter) and Dan Patterson (one of the country’s foremost military aviation photographers), to Thomas Schiff (who brought in his 360-degree panoramic camera) and Ty Greenlees (the lead photographer who brought his own airplane for aerial shots). It was the photographic equivalent of bringing the Special Forces into Clinton County to chase down insurgent photographs. Naturalist and landscape specialist Ron Levi mapped most of the county, studying its agrarian vistas through four seasons to learn where the light fell most advantageously. Bob Flischel, the noted portrait photographer, came in from Cincinnati for lengthy sessions involving a sound stage of lights (as well as the patience of his subjects). The photographers juggled whimsical weather and the vagaries of people, machinery, and livestock. They scheduled and re-scheduled. The foundation, in a farsighted momentof its own, gave the photographers—most of whom did not know the county—a virtual carte blanche to discover the essential imagery of the place we call home. Their work to locate our universal imagery has become a picture of life in one particular Midwestern place, held firmly

An Airman's Odyssey: An Air Force Memoir

An Airman’s Odyssey: An Air Force Memoir

$24.65

Like Homer’s Odyssey, An Airman’s Odyssey tells the incredible story of a twenty-one year journey highlighted by one amazing adventure after another. The story you are about to read will take you on a fifty thousand mile journey from the East Coast of the United States to the West, across the largest ocean in the world five times, to a tropical island barely big enough to land a plane on. It will transport you deep inside a military program larger and more secret than any since the Manhattan Project, then to the foot of an erupting volcano, the second largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century. This is the story of invisible laser beams fired from jet airplanes at targets on the ground several miles away. It’s also the story of senators and generals, FBI agents working with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations to prevent a major compromise of classified information, and of losing a friend, killed in the line of duty. It is a story of the love of family, and a deep appreciation for country. It’s a voyage of self-discovery, and of going home, none of which would be possible without divine intervention at every critical turn. Just as when the gods intervened for and against Odysseus, the forces of fortune and adversity can be clearly seen in An Airman’s Odyssey; but unlike Homer’s Odyssey, this is no work of fiction. The stories are real, and the divine intervention is focused and purposeful, not cunning and divisive. It will take the reader, as it did the author, on a wonderful journey across the spectrum of human emotions, from laughter to tears, suspense to a sense of relief, as well as adventure and intrigue. So sit down, relax, and hang on, the journey is about to begin…

An Otto Brothers Collection Of Waterfowl Reference

An Otto Brothers Collection Of Waterfowl Reference

$39.99

There once was a quote that went “there is no such thing as enough reference. Reference, reference, reference.” To the many decoy carvers, the growing amount of taxidermists, and all the general Waterfowl enthusiasts throughout the country this statement could not be truer. What started out as a simple quest to gain more reference through photos for the Otto brothers, turned into a project anticipated by many to add to their library of current reference that is vital to meet their needs. John and Jason Otto spent well over a year in the field chasing down and photographing their subjects in the many poses and situations it takes to create usable reference. This entailed a vast array of geographical locations logging thousands of miles. In the first Volume the Otto Brothers randomly take on ten selected species and show through stunning pictures the many angles, poses, and natural attitudes of these Waterfowl. Jason’s expertise on the camera tells their stories, shapes, and sizes in a format usable for the many hobbies that accompany all those whose passion is shared by these brothers. Along the way they have supplied some field notes from there thousands of hours spent with these species and supply a few unique facts and stories not found in the traditional text. For the bird watchers they give some general information where these birds can be found in the wild. For the carver they offer some insight for each species that may be of some use. The taxidermist will also find a hint or two. For those simply interested in adding to there collection of wildlife art there are some interesting observations for general information. Stay tuned for future Volumes as the Otto Brothers continue toscout the fields until they have brought you all of the North American species of Waterfowl to complete this set of books.

Excerpt: Akeman Street was a major Roman road in England that linked Watling Street with the Fosse Way . Its junction with Watling Steet was just north of Verulamium (near modern St Alban’s ) and that with the Fosse Way was at Corinium Dobunnorum (now Cirencester ). Its course passes through towns and villages including Hemel Hempstead , Berkhamsted , Tring , Aylesbury , Alchester (outside modern Bicester ), Chesterton , Kirtlington , Ramsden and Asthall .Parts of the A41 road between Tring and Bicester use the course of the former Roman road. A minor road between Chesterton and Kirtlington also uses its course. Other parts are in use as public footpaths , including a 6 miles (9.7 km) stretch between Tackley and Stonesfield that is part of the Oxfordshire Way .The origins of the road’s name are uncertain but certainly date back to the Early Middle Ages . Some have suggested that “Akeman” derives from the Anglo-Saxon words for “oak-man”. Others have suggested a connection with Bath , which the Anglo-Saxons called Acemannesceastre (Acemannes apparently being derived from the Roman name Aquae Sulis ). It is unclear how this might have become associated with the road, but one possibility is that the name was originally used for the longer stretch of road from Bath. The name “Akeman Street”

Excerpt: Alexander David Turner (born 6 January 1986, Sheffield, England) is an English musician and member of Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets. He is the vocalist and lead guitarist in both bands. He is the main songwriter in the Arctic Monkeys and shares writing duties in side-project The Last Shadow Puppets with Miles Kane. Along with Andy Nicholson and Matthew Helders, Turner attended Stocksbridge High School, and together with his neighbour Jamie Cook, formed Arctic Monkeys in 2002. Turner is believed to have started learning guitar because of the band that was one of his main influences, Oasis. Turner has always been the band’s main songwriter, and his observations of inner city England have drawn comparisons to The Streets’ frontman Mike Skinner. However, Turner has admitted that during the early days of the band “nobody wanted to admit they wrote so we kept trying other singers so they’d do it for us.” Despite enjoying songwriting, Turner shied away from acknowledgment because he “didn’t want to have piss took out of !” However, he has suggested that he has always enjoyed songwriting and that since getting his guitar, has spent most of his spare moments penning new lyrics, as “thats what ‘d feel comfortable doing. Describing the manner in which he constructs his lyrics, Turner says “I’ll think about something and I’ll be writing, penning something down and I’ll keep building on that. The best stuff comes when Ive got a melody and a rhythm so I know how many syllables each line is going to have and then build it up from there, and make it a whole thing, and try and pay attention to every aspect.” They recorded their smash hit album in August 2005 (Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not) shortly after securing their first recor… More:

Arlington, California [Images of America Series]

$3.11

The neighborhood of Arlington, located about five miles southwest of downtown Riverside, was first settled in the 1870s and was later developed as a town site in 1877 by philanthropist Samuel C. Evans and William Sayward. Citrus groves flourished in the area, providing the community with a newfound wealth. Large and gracious homes were built on wide streets lined with beautiful shade trees. Arlington’s commercial district at Van Buren Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue expanded to include a bank, chamber of commerce, newspaper, store, church, boardinghouse, and post office with its own Arlington postmark, in use since 1888. In the early 1900s, an electric railway was built down the center of Magnolia Avenue ending at beautiful Chemewa Park with its large trees, dance pavilion, zoo, and polo field. Today Arlington retains much of its neighborhood feeling while undergoing a large-scale redevelopment project for a future retail and commercial district.

Following public input, the design was completed in 2003. Construction began in April 2004 and took 40 months. The Center features a roof made of complex geometric folded plates. The roof is highly visible from the surrounding freeways and the man-made Tempe Town Lake, which occupies the natural watercourse of the Salt River, immediately adjacent to the site. It is also visible by many airplanes landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, two miles west of the building.
