lisa i am an ac guy and you can but make sure your using the rite freon. if its an old car and uses r-22 then you will have to retro fit it which is sold at auto parts stores. if its a 95 or newer then it should be ok, next is it working at all ? if not then you might have a leak and will need to have a vacuum pulled through the system. air is an enemy of an a/c system it causes the system to make an acid and will in time ruin your a/c system. but like i said if its working then that should be ok . hook up the the low pressure side of the a/c it might have a blue cap or L on the cap and other way is to find both caps and the one that is on the thicker pipe is the low or suction side. place a thermometer in one of your vents open all the doors and put the a/c on high and read the thermometer it should read around 55 degrees coming out of the vent and remember add one can at a time and wait about 5 to 10 Min’s before adding another one as it takes a little time to regulate in the system also after to cans of freon add a can of a/c oil to it too
