Handicap Accessible What can I do to make one of our hotel rooms more handicap accessible?
I run an old concrete hotel which isn’t very friendly to people in wheelchairs. I know there isn’t much we can do to the physical structure to help with this, (we can’t widen doors, we can’t knock out walls) but I know we can add bars, and pull chains and stuff.
What resources are available to me help me with this project? Is there a web-site that would list recommendations, standards or ideas?

You can contact Matt Roloff through this site where his invention is featured. He has become an authority on how to improve hotel rooms for the handicapped and is very accessible.

I think it’s great that you are willing to do improvements even tho you aren’t required to.
Some thoughts come to mind as well. Check into what kinds of faucets are available and lower some of your sinks. Lower light switches and raise plug plates. Have several grabbers available to pick things up off of the floor with or put up and take things down from closet shelves. Have lamps that turn on by a touch. Make sure that towels, wash cloths, etc. are on lower shelves. Is there any possible way you could convert a couple of your rooms to roll in shower stalls? Have two rods in the closets, one at about 30 inches high. Lower the knobs or install handles on the doors. Lower the mirrors in several of the rooms, put a mirror on the back of a door. Lower the chain on the door into the room. Install panic buttons in a couple of places in these same rooms.
