For their second long-player, the Astronauts got distinctly more ambitious, and with good results. The harmony singing, while no match for the Beach Boys or Jan & Dean, is a lot better this time out, especially on the title track and “Our Car Club” (which are a lot of fun to begin with). And their playing is bolder as well, with the result being that the group’s second album still makes good listening five decades later. As with its predecessor, this record is never boring, and it never settles down. For this album, they rely on Duane Eddy alumnus Steve Douglas for a lot of the material, and it mostly all works, with only a few moments that are less than bracing — and one Roger Christian/Steve Douglas composition, “Chevy Scarfer,” was already a lovingly nostalgic doo wop homage in 1964 that holds up even better in that vein in the 21st century. The playing is still better than the singing, but it’s all amazingly worthwhile, and deeply evocative of its era. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Competition Coupe/Surfin' with the Astronauts

Competition Coupe/Surfin’ with the Astronauts

$19.66

Bear Family Records continued exercising its infatuation with American rock & roll, reissuing the first two albums by the Astronauts (listed in reverse order of release in the title here). The group’s first album, Surfin’ with the Astronauts, has the greater reputation, being a kind of minor off the cuff classic, cut in just two days by a band that was brand-new to surf music. But the material on Competition Coupe, if lacking the appeal of something done on the fly, and a lot more calculated in the process, is just as enjoyable and a little more ambitious, at least as far as the singing (admittedly, never this group’s strong point) and the selection of material. In any case, it sounds great on this CD, and the 51 minutes of surf and car songs here are a delight, even if they’re not groundbreaking. And the annotation about the band and the circumstances behind the two albums is fascinating. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi Performers: Bob Demmon – Guitar, Vocals; Dennis Lindsey – Guitar, Vocals; James Gallagher – Drums; Jon Patterson – Guitar, Vocals; Rich Fifield – Guitar, Vocals; Steve Douglas – Saxophone; Steve Kreisman – Saxophone

Competition Coupe/Astronauts Orbit Campus

Competition Coupe/Astronauts Orbit Campus

$13.58

Collectables’ single disc release of Competition Coupe/Orbit Campus collects two 1964 albums from the Astronauts. Competition Coupe was the Astronauts’ attempt at a hot rod album and its surprisingly enjoyable. There’s not many classic hot rod songs — “Our Car Club” comes the closest — but it’s a speedy, trashy delight with such songs as “The Hearse,” “Devil Driver’s Theme,” “Happy Ho-Daddy,” “Devil Driver,” “Chevy Scarfer,” “El Aguila,” 4:56 Stingray” and “650 Scrambler.” Orbit Campus is the Astronauts’ take on frat-rock classics, which means there’s a bunch of rock & roll oldies — “Johnny B. Goode,” “Be-Bop-A-Lu-La,” “Good Golly Miss Molly,” “Bony Moronie,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” etc. — plus the odd collegiate folk song like “Greenback Dollar.” The end result is a fun, if unremarkable, rock & roll record, much like this single-disc compilation. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Bob Demmon – Guitar, Vocals; Dennis Lindsey – Guitar, Vocals; Jim Gallagher – Drums, Vocals; Rich Fifield – Vocals; Stormy Patterson – Bass, Vocals

American Graffiti [Collector's Edition]

American Graffiti [Collector's Edition]

$10.98

It’s the last night of summer 1962, and the teenagers of Modesto, California, want to have some fun before adult responsibilities close in. Among them are Steve (Ron Howard) and Curt (Richard Dreyfuss), college-bound with mixed feelings about leaving home; nerdy Terry “The Toad” (Charles Martin Smith), who scores a dream date with blonde Debbie (Candy Clark); and John (Paul Le Mat ), a 22-year-old drag racer who wonders how much longer he can stay champion and how he got stuck with 13-year-old Carol (Mackenzie Phillips) in his deuce coupe. As D. J. Wolfman Jack spins 41 vintage tunes on the radio throughout the night, Steve ponders a future with girlfriend Laurie (Cindy Williams), Curt chases a mystery blonde, Terry tries to act cool, and Paul prepares for a race against Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford), but nothing can stop the next day from coming, and with it the vastly different future ushered in by the 1960s. Fresh off The Godfather (1972), producer Francis Ford Coppola had the clout to get his friend George Lucas’s project made, but only for $750,000 on a 28-day shooting schedule. Despite technical obstacles, and having to shoot at night, cinematographer Haskell Wexler gave the film the neon-lit aura that Lucas wanted, evoking the authentic look of a suburban strip to go with the authentic sound of rock-n-roll. Universal, which wanted to call the film Another Slow Night in Modesto, thought it was unreleasable. But Lucas’ period detail, co-writers Willard Huyck’s and Gloria Katz’s realistic dialogue, and the film’s nostalgia for the pre-Vietnam years apparently appealed to a 1973 audience embroiled in cultural chaos: American Graffiti became the third most popular movie of 1973 (after The Exorcist and The Sting), establishing the reputations of Lucas (whose next film would be Star Wars) and his young cast, and furthering the onset of soundtrack-driven, youth-oriented movies. Although the film helped spark 1970s nostalgia for the 1950s, nothing else would capture the flavor of the era with the same humorous candor and latent sense of foreboding. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

Three Window Coupe [Bonus Tracks]

Three Window Coupe [Bonus Tracks]

$11.18

With the recording of “Three Window Coupe” and its subsequent album and follow-ups, producers Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston started singing on the Rip Chords sessions as well. This move effectively forced original members Phil Stewart and Ernie Bringas into touring-group-only status. On this album, only Stewart appears anywhere, and even then, it’s only on two tracks, “Bonneville Bonnie” and “Old Car Made in ’52.” But as another Bruce and Terry production, this is top-notch stuff, with all the L.A. session heavyweights and the best hot rod-surf production this side of Brian Wilson and Jan & Dean. In addition to the original 12-song lineup (chock full of great covers like “Gas Money” and “Surf City”), this also features three bonus tracks, the singles “One Piece Topless Bathing Suit,” “Wah-Wahini,” and “Red Hot Roadster,” the latter tune from the soundtrack for the teen movie microepic A Swingin’ Summer. No matter who is actually singing this stuff, this is top-notch California surf/hot rod material and a welcome addition to anyone’s rock & roll collection. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi

Does NFS Undercover for Wii have this…..?

I read the car list on some websites.
And they said the Porsche Cayman S and BMW Z4 M Coupe are in the game.
But they also said they are only in the collectors edition version of NFS Undercover.
