Balance Powertrain
Transmission Problem-Overdriving and Idling?
I have a 99 Monte Carlo. I took her to a new mechanic (as I just moved) wanting to make sure the front end parts (bearings and joints) were in good shape a couple days ago, and no work was needed just balanced tires. Today was the first time I did any highway driving and she won’t go into overdrive and the engine starts idling (800 RPMs steady) if I let off the gas. No problems shifting regular gears, but was tac’ed up to 3K going only 70 MPH. I know a thing or 2 about working on cars, but never worked on a auto transmission only manuals and not good with powertrain and suspension. My guess is that I have a faulty sensor on the trans, am I wrong? Do you think this is the mechanics fault or just bad luck (the car has over 129k miles on her)?
I checked the fluid first, and it’s fine.
Chevy uses a lock up torque converter, actuated by a tiny solenoid valve in the transmission. It sounds like your solenoid isn’t working. Is the transmission full?
It’s called a TCC solenoid, if you want to look it up. That’s “torque converter control” solenoid…
