 MARGINAL MEN WITH DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS

MARGINAL MEN WITH DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS

$80.75

Compared to ample information on why sub-Saharan African countries continue to lose their highly educated human resource to the West, very little exists on the experiences of these migrant professionals. Meaningful solutions to the issues of brain drain could be achieved if African governments and interested institutions would include an appraisal of the lived experiences of these professionals living outside the continent. This book departs from the traditional one-sided storytelling from the perspective of prognosticators on the African continent. The storytellers in this book are 10 sub-Saharan African professors who have migrated to the United States and are teaching in a predominantly White University in the Midwest. Readers would find a lucid analysis of the educational systems that produced these professors; conditions that birthed their migration; their experiences with the culture and people of the US; issues of race and racism; diversity, social justice, marginalization and double consciousness. Higher education and migration policymakers would find this book priceless. It is also a must read for African professionals contemplating migrating to the West.

Minority Status, Oppositional Culture and Schooling

Minority Status, Oppositional Culture and Schooling

$56.95

This book is the definitive and final presentation of John Ogbu’s cultural ecological model and the many debates that his work has sparked during the past decade. The theory and empirical foundation of Ogbu’s scholarship, which some have mistakenly reduced to the acting white hypothesis, is fully presented and re-visited in this posthumous collection of his new writings plus the works of over 20 scholars. Ogbu’s own chapters present how his ideas about minority education and culture developed. Readers will find in these chapters the theoretical roots of his cultural ecological model. The book is organized as a dialogue between John Ogbu and the scholarly community, including his most ardent critics; Ogbu’s own work can be read at the same time as his critics have their say. Minority Status, Oppositional Culture, and Schooling examines content, methodological, and policy issues framing the debate on academic achievement, school engagement, and oppositional culture. It brings together in one volume, for the first time, some of the most critical works on these issues as well as examples of programs aimed at re-engagement. In addition to African Americans, it also looks at school engagement among Native American and Latino students. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the study of the academic achievement gap.

No Mentor but Myself: Jack London on Writing and Writers

No Mentor but Myself: Jack London on Writing and Writers

$14.95

Jack London, one of the most read and recognized figures in American literature, produced an immense body of work, including 22 novels, 200 short stories, memoirs, newspaper articles, book reviews, essays, and poems. A significant and revealing feature of London’s literary life lies in his introspective observations on the craft of writing, brought together in this collection of essays, reviews, letters, and autobiographical writings. London’s public role as a daring, carefree man of action has obscured the shrewd, disciplined, and methodical writer whose practical reflections and meditations on his profession provide a vivid portrait of the literary industry in turn-of-the-century America. For this edition, a significant amount of new material has been added.Reviews of the First Edition“Dale Walker has rendered a valuable service in his painstaking collection of London’s writings about writers. He has included 43 selections, 20 of which are previously uncollected: 13 essays, and excerpts from London’s two autobiographical works. The result is a remarkably comprehensive view of London ‘the writer’s writer.’”—American Literary Realism“An absorbing account of how hard the writer worked to learn his craft. . . . We find a master prose stylist concerned with problems of selectivity and concrete issues of tone, form, atmosphere, and point of view.”—Modern Philology“A remarkable collection. . . . This is a firsthand look at a writer’s honest and forthright opinions on his craft.”—Los Angeles Times

So What?: Teaching Children What Matters in Math

So What?: Teaching Children What Matters in Math

$25

It’s no wonder so many adults and children feel mathematically inadequate. Benchmarks are anticipated . . . standards and rubrics are established . . . guidelines and content are set-all before the teacher even meets the child. In “So What?” Tim Brandy invites teachers to step back and envision a more authentic approach to mathematics instruction-one that is relevant to children’s worlds and reflective of their natural inclinations. Brandy draws upon his twenty years of experience in the classroom to address some of the critical challenges of mathematics reform: How can we create situations for our students that will allow them to experience the excitement and satisfaction of deriving strategies and concepts as they pursue questions they choose? How can we allow them the time and support to develop their thinking? How can we stop covering textbooks and begin uncovering roadways to mathematical thinking? “So What?” is a fascinating account of the transformation of Brandy’s teaching, with implications that reach far beyond his classroom. Brandy states, “It is our responsibility to find what matters for children and create the environment where the possibility of pursuit exists.” “So What?” offers guidance and inspiration for those looking to meet that challenge.

 The Politics of Storytelling

The Politics of Storytelling

$74.99

First Nations literature is a rather new field of literature, which was recognized as a distinct literary category only in the mid 20th century. Since then, First Nations authors have tried to work against stereotypical images about themselves by means of writing and have aimed at a more authentic portrayal of indigenous peoples from a Native point of view. The study puts its focus on two prevalent themes that can often be found in First Nations literature; firstly, the portrayal of political activism that constitutes a rebellion against government policies; and secondly, the quest for identity of the protagonist, which happens in relation with the Native community and the homeland. Although the novels differ greatly in the genres, styles and structures applied, the themes mentioned are central in all three works of fiction. This means that the novels all comment on the influence politics has had on the lives of Natives and illustrate that it is important to come to terms with cultural traditions in order to find one’s own identity as a Native person.

Birth is life’s first miracle, shrouded in awe and mystery. Death, however, remains the proverbial elephant in the room–real and looming, but ignored. Death deserves more credit than it receives. The statistics are frightening. The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) 2009 Student Survey shows that just 19.7 percent of 2009 graduates who applied for a job actually have one. And, according to NACE’s Job Outlook 2010 Fall Preview, employers expect to hire 7 percent fewer graduates from the college Class of 2010 than they hired from the Class of 2009. What’s worse, this issue cannot completely be blamed on a poor economy. Entry-level hiring should have increased because many employers have laid off more expensive, experienced talent. So what’s preventing new talent from entering the career marketplace?Millennials–those individuals born between 1977 and 1997 and also known as Generation Y–often expect college to teach them how to find jobs and are disappointed upon finding out this is not the case. And the career advice they do receive comes from “authority figures” (i.e., campus career center staff), whom they do not believe or trust. These graduates need practical and insightful guidance from someone who knows the challenges they face and how to overcome them.”#ENTRYLEVELtweet Book01″ by career expert Heather R. Huhman is a must-read for college students and recent grads who want to learn what it takes to find, land, and succeed in an entry-level career.
