Need help with iambic pentameter and rhyming couplets.?

For our Brit lit class we have to write poems in iambic pentameter and rhyming couplets. I’m not sure if I’m doing to well I really need someone to tell me if this is good or not in regards to is it iambic pentameter or not and how I can change it.

Jon A is the true hero of guitar.
Drives fast his minivan like a sport’s car.
Blazes through the water in victory
Is quite unsure about his destiny
Says computer gaming’s where it’s at
He likes to draw, to sketch, to joke, to chat

I rewrote it and added a few lines:
Please help.

Jon A is a great player of guitar.
His minivan driven like a racecar.
Shoots through the water claiming victory
Not very sure about his destiny
He says computer gaming’s where it’s at
He likes to draw, to sketch, to joke, to chat
Gifted is he at playing the cello
Gray hair, blue eyes, not more to this fellow

The meter in line 2 is a bit forced:

drives FAST his MIN i VAN like A sports CAR

If you say it aloud like that, it doesn’t sound quite natural, does it? The stress on the word “a” is especially problematic. (Also “sports car” would normally be pronounced with equal stress on both syllables, and “minivan” is stressed on the first syllable, with the second and third unstressed.)

Line 3 is even further from iambic pentameter. Try saying it aloud with the stress on every second syllable and you’ll see how unnatural that sounds:

bla ZES through THE wa TER in VIC to RY

Line 5 has the right number of beats — there are five stressed syllables in the line — but it has only 9 syllables. Adding “He” at the beginning of the line would fix that:

he SAYS com PU ter GAM ing’s WHERE it’s AT

The Jeannie Tate Show – Oprah
